From Wheeler Peak to Your Favorite T-Shirt: Celebrating New Mexico’s Highest Summit

As hiking season winds down in Red River, Wheeler Peak begins trading its summer wildflowers for snow-covered slopes. For most of us, summiting with several feet of snow underfoot is a hard pass—but that doesn't mean we're done celebrating the mountain!

At 13,161 feet, Wheeler Peak is New Mexico's highest point. Named in honor of surveyor George Montague Wheeler, this iconic summit draws hikers from near and far every summer. And whether you've already stood at the top or it's still on your bucket list, there's a reason this mountain holds a special place in our hearts.

One Summit, Several Ways to Get There

One of the best things about Wheeler Peak? The journey depends on which side of the mountain you choose.

From Taos Ski Valley: The popular Williams Lake route offers spectacular alpine scenery before a steep climb toward the summit. For a longer approach, the Bull-of-the-Woods route winds through high-country terrain and over additional peaks before reaching Wheeler.

From Red River: The East Fork and Middle Fork trailheads offer a different adventure. Routes through Lost Lake and Horseshoe Lake lead toward the summit through alpine lakes, rugged ridgelines, and quieter stretches of wilderness. These are longer, demanding hikes that reward prepared hikers with a memorable day in the mountains.

And Wheeler isn't the only high-country adventure around here. Trails toward Goose Lake, Gold Hill, and the surrounding Latir peaks offer plenty of reasons to keep exploring.

Whichever route you choose, plan ahead for high altitude and rapidly changing mountain weather. If you're hiking in August, be sure to check for the annual Taos Pueblo cultural closure, which affects several trails around Wheeler Peak.

A Little Piece of the Summit to Take Home

There's something special about a summit souvenir. It's not just a shirt, sticker, or embroidered patch—it's a reminder of the early morning start, the miles of climbing, and that feeling of accomplishment when you finally reach the top.

At A Frame By The River, we're grateful to every customer who has chosen our Wheeler Peak merchandise to celebrate their adventure. We're honored to be a small part of your story, whether you've conquered the summit or are still dreaming about the day you will.

As the snow settles into the high country, we'll be looking forward to another season of mountain adventures. Until then, you can bring the mountains home with a little piece of Red River.

Thanks for making A Frame By The River part of your journey!
